Finding a good hairdresser is tough. FACT. But as a curly kella it’s virtually impossible. It took me 5 years to find my curl maestro, Michael Price, owner of Unruly Curls in Ladbroke Grove. I’m sharing him with you, because he’s great and I think every struggling curly kella should see him. I recently went to see him to get a much-needed haircut ( 6 months after my last one!) and asked him to share his curls of wisdom!
Curly Hair Care
I know a lot of South-Asian curly kellas choose to risk the health of their hair in order to mimic the long-sleek-shiny look so revered in the Orient. But here’s the thing: curls can be just as attractive and striking. It just takes some commitment and research. The past 14 years have seen me refining my technique, testing out hairdressers GLOBALLY and learning what lends itself to a cool curly cut! Every salon I’ve been to, I ask questions to search out the key. Now, styling my hair is a ritual (isn’t any hair routine?) but it actually a) is quicker than straightening, b) safeguards the health of my hair and c) looks fab.
So I bring this blog to fellow South-Asian sisters. Here you will find helpful tips, curl-specific products and hairdressers so you can rock those curls with confidence.
As a child of the ’80s, it was all about curls. Remember Nicole Kidman’s luscious coils in Days of Thunder? Or Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman? These A-listers put textured tresses on the map!
Unfortunately for these ladies their curls are no more. However a resurgence of natural waves and textures has come about. Below are some of my leading starlets rocking curls on the red carpet both past and present. They are my own poster pin-ups that keep me inspired and confident in my curls!
